Child Proofing Sandpits
Some handy safety tips for your backyard sandpit
Sandpits are great fun for children. However, a sandpit that is not maintained can be hazardous to their health. Here’s some tips for keeping your sandpit safe:
- Only use pure sand, not sand that has been mixed with other substances such as marble dust. Perform a quality check by dropping a small amount of sand into a glass of water, then stir. The sand is fine if the water is clear when the sand settles. If the water is cloudy or murky, then the sand is not good for use in a sandpit.
- Choose an area that is well shaded and with good drainage to place your sandpit. Try to avoid placing your sandpit under a tree, as there is likely to be dead leaves, rotting fruits and other detritus that could get into the sand. It is also important to place your sandpit in a place where children can easily be supervised as they play.
