Why sandpits are well-suited to the explorative and imaginative nature of young children
Sandpits are not only fun for children – they are a great way to encourage participation and imagination, and for developing physical, cognitive and social skills. Some of the benefits of playing in sand include:
- Physical development. Children develop muscle skills as they dig, pour, sift, and scoop.
- Social skills. Children engaging in group play develop skills such as empathy, compromise and negotiation.
- Cognitive development. Mathematical and scientific concepts can be developed through the introduction of stimulating and challenging sandpit accessories such as measuring spoons and cups, ropes and pulleys, ramps, sieve and funnels.
- Creative development. Children can be encouraged to draw and write in the sand, and make casts and moulds to stimulate imaginative play.
Sandpits are an ideal environment to foster the explorative and imaginative nature of children through purposeful, self-inititiated play.
